The main types of cannabis

Cannabis plants contain hundreds of chemical compounds, but the best known are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD).

There are three main types of cannabis plants:

  1. Sativa – This cannabis strain is known for higher THC levels than CBD. It gives more “head high” and stimulates brain activity, reduces pain and increases appetite.
  2. Indica – Indica varieties usually contain more CBD and less THC. The effect is more relaxing and calming, helping to reduce anxiety, relieve pain and increase sleep.
  3. Ruderalis – This variety naturally has lower levels of THC. It is not commonly grown recreationally, but breeders have used it to create autoflowering strains.

Different strains have different cannabinoid content, so it’s important to choose the right one for your needs. Sativa, indica and hybrid strains combine these effects in different ways.
